Read Me Last Updated: January 18, 2012. Any updates to these Read Me notes will be available at docs.embarcadero.com.

The ER/Studio Viewer provides to anyone outside of the data modeling team an interactive environment for viewing ER/Studio data models. This distributable application provides the same sophisticated and advanced viewing features offered to modelers through the native ER/Studio application. Why rely on static representations and graphical snapshots that are difficult to navigate and find information in? The ER/Studio Viewer displays the same DM1 model file generated by the native ER/Studio application. This enables the Viewer to provide all of the data model's underlying information, such as table and column definitions, in the same accessible format as ER/Studio. To ensure data integrity and security, the ER/Studio Viewer offers no editing capabilities preventing unauthorized modifications to the DM1 file.

WHAT'S NEW IN ER/STUDIO VIEWER VERSION 9.5

ER/Studio Viewer 9.5 has been updated to take advantage of new features and bug fixes in ER/Studio Data Architect 9.5 and ER/Studio Repository 6.5.

WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION ER/Studio DA 9.5 and ER/Studio Repository 6.5

Customer requests continue to guide us in our quest to bring to market the best database tools available. Thank you for your support.

The following sections provide a brief overview of the major features of ER/Studio Data Architect 9.5. You can find more in-depth information in the New Features Guide and in the Users Guide.

General Updates

Graphics Improvements

You can now select multiple objects (entities, views, and shapes) and apply a layout command. All relationships, view relationships or lines that belong to the selected objects will be affected by the layout. You can use existing layout commands from the menu and toolbar. If you want to layout the entire submodel, no objects should be selected. For more information, see Partial Layout.

Custom Datatypes

Using the Datatype Mapping Editor, you can now create your own custom datatypes. For more information, see Custom Datatypes.

Universal Naming Utility

From the Search Results window, you can now double-click an entry to gain access to the editor for the selected object editors.

Universal Mappings

Mappings you create for Tables, Attributes, Views and Shapes are now automatically matched when comparing and merging models. In addition, mapping you force in the Compare and Merge Utility can be saved in the target model for use in future compare/merge operations. You can see and edit the mappings you create on the Where Used tab of the object.

New Platform Versions

This release enhances support of the following database platforms through additional version support:

New Platforms

ER/Studio Data Architect now supports this database platform:

New Operating Systems

ER/Studio Data Architect now supports this Operating System:

New DBMS Features

DB2 LUW 9.x

TIMESTAMP datatypes now support generated by default option.

DB2 z/OS

Range-partitioned Universal Tablespaces are now supported

Netezza 6.0

Organizing keys are now supported

Oracle 10g and 11g

Capacity planning of tables can now be based on the average row size.

Teradata 12 and 13

ST_GEOMETRY datatype is now supported.

COLLECT STATISTICS and CHECKSUM clauses are now supported.

PostgreSQL 8.0 and 9.x

Support has been added for uuid, money, xml, and serial datatypes; uuid is mapped to the UNIQUEID logical type; money is mapped to MONEY logical type, xml is mapped to XML logical type; and serial is mapped to SERIAL/INTEGER logical type.

Repository Enhancements

Windows 8

Now supported for ER/Data Architect Repository.

Security Center

To make it easier to handle permissions, group support has been added to the ER/Studio Repository Security Center. Repository administrators can assign roles to the group at repository, project and diagram levels, then simply add or remove users from the group to apply the settings to the users quickly and easily. ER/STUDIO VIEWER FEATURES

ER/Studio Portal Integration

ER/Studio Portal has been integrated with ER/Studio Viewer to enable the Repository to be explored on the Repository tab. Portal Search criteria can be used to retrieve models from ER/Studio Repository.

Visual Data Lineage (VDL)

Visually analyze and document how data flows through your organization without needing to inspect code. View and print data lineage diagrams from the Data Lineage tab. For more information, see "Documenting Data Extraction, Transformation, and Load" in the User Guide.

Repository Connectivity

Viewer users connect directly to all repository diagrams and named releases. No longer are they reliant on ER/Studio users to get the diagrams and place them on a network drive for them to access. Use Portal Search criteria to find diagrams in the Repository. From the Repository tab, view and print out reports on ER/Studio Data Architect and ER/Studio Business Architect diagrams or workspaces and their objects.

Data Dictionary Access

Viewer users now have full access the data dictionary of ER/Studio diagrams. Viewer users can navigate and open all dictionary object editors to browse critical information like attachment values or domain binding information.

Read-only Editor Access to All Model Objects

Unlimited viewing of Model objects such as Entities, Attributes, Relationships, Views, schema objects, and others. Viewer users have access to all properties such as storage parameters, the DDL preview, definitions/notes – everything.

Model Layout Capabilities

The Viewer displays the same sophisticated layout algorithms available in ER/Studio.The layout engines can be used to clean up a model layout prior to printing to make the model more readable.

Workstation and Concurrent Licensing

ER/Studio Viewer now has the same concurrent and workstation licensing as ER/Studio. If your viewer license has expired please contact [email protected] or [email protected] to unlock it.

Object Editor Access

ER/Studio Viewer now allows the user read-only access to the property editors for all objects on the diagram and in the explorer tree. You'll have complete, detailed model information such as definitions, notes, constraints, dependency and pre/post-SQL and relationship properties.

Entity Pop-Up Help

A customizable feature that allows the user to instantly obtain information related to the entity/table objects by hovering the cursor over the desired object. The user can customize this view by selecting text from the entity's definition, notes, attributes, keys, color properties and more. Select "View" from the Main Menu, then select the "Model Help Settings" submenu for the complete list.

Model Explorer Browser

Browse and find information within the model easily with a familiar Explorer-type browser. Toggle between Logical and Physical Models, drill down to the attribute level while the application highlights the object on screen for easy identification.

Zoom Window

This sizable, positionable window magnifies the view of all objects on the modeling workspace underneath the cursor. This is particularly useful when navigating large models.

Customizable Model Views

Choose the level of information you wish to view within the model as it appears on the workspace. The user can choose to see the model as a series of simple entities and their relationships, can expose all of an entity's attributes, view only the primary keys and more. In addition, the users can the increase or decrease the zoom-level via a readily available toolbar selection.

Choose Your Design Notation

ER/Studio Viewer allows the user to toggle between any one of the three leading data modeling notations supported by the native ER/Studio Data Architect application: IDEF1X, Information Engineering (IE or 'Crows Foot') and Filtered IE (hidden foreign keys).

Printing Capability

ER/Studio Viewer allows the user to print diagrams. The application has the same level of printing support available in the native ER/Studio application. A full range of printing capabilities is available, including print-to-scale and more.

Complete ER/Studio Help Guide

Provides the same level of information found in the commercially available version of ER/Studio, including information on the data modeling notations, how to use ER/Studio's advanced graphical features and more.

On-Line HTML Help

ER/Studio features an HTML help facility that takes advantage of the universal search and browsing capabilities of a browser based system.
