Welcome to ER/Studio Viewer 20.0.x

ER/Studio Home | ER/Studio Documentation | IDERA Technical Support | www.idera.com

Thank you for using IDERA ER/Studio Viewer. ER/Studio Viewer provides to anyone outside of the data modeling team an interactive environment for viewing ER/Studio data models. This distributable application provides the same sophisticated and advanced viewing features offered to modelers through the native ER/Studio application. Why rely on static representations and graphical snapshots that are difficult to navigate and find information? ER/Studio Viewer displays the same DM1 model file generated by the native ER/Studio application. This enables the Viewer to provide all of the data model's underlying information, such as table and column definitions, in the same accessible format as ER/Studio. To ensure data integrity and security, ER/Studio Viewer offers no editing capabilities preventing unauthorized modifications to the DM1 file.

What's New in Version 20.0

Includes an improved Diagram Data Version Upgrade user interface

ER/Studio Data Architect 20.0.0 includes an improved user interface for the Diagram Data Version Upgrade window. This window lets the user know which diagrams within the Repository require an upgrade and provides a checkbox next to each item for the user to select for a bulk update.

Simply check the appropriate box(es), and then click OK to begin upgrading those selected diagrams. Once complete, ERDA lets you know the number of diagrams upgraded, a list of any diagrams that failed, and the overall time taken to perform the process. For more information about this feature, see Diagram Data Version Upgrade.

Repository Options dialog box now allows users to select whether to add DDL code to Team Server

The Repository Options dialog box in ER/Studio Data Architect now includes an option under the Team Server selection that allows users to save the Table and/or View DDL to Team Server. The DDL information then appears when viewing the specific Entity type in Team Server. The following options are currently available:

·        Save Table DDL with Physical Models for Team Server

·        Save View DDL with Physical Models for Team Server

For more information about these options and more, see Repository Options Team Server tab.

Adds support for comments on View Columns in the View Editor

This release of ER/Studio adds support for comments in the View Columns area of the View Editor. When reverse and forward engineering views or importing views from SQL, the Comments property of the View Column is populated with comments from the database or SQL. This information now appears in the View Editor.

Includes the ability to change a relationship type for containment relationships in Google BigQuery and MongoDB

Google BigQuery and MongoDB users can take advantage of a new feature that allows you to easily change a relationship type for containment relationships. While viewing a containment relationship that you want to change the relationship type, click Switch Relationship Class in the ribbon bar. The following actions occur:

·        If the line is referencing:

1.      ERDA removes the Foreign Key field/column in the child object/table.

2.      A dialog appears asking you to select the desired containing object, and offers Parent, Child, and Cancel options. Note that Child is the default.

3.      ERDA changes the relationship type to containing in the direction selected in the dialog.

4.      A new foreign Key property is created in the Parent object.

·        If the line is containing:

1.      ERDA removes the Foreign Key field/column in the parent object/table.

2.      A dialog appears asking you to select the desired referencing object, and offers Parent, Child, and Cancel options. Note that Parent is the default.

3.      ERDA changes the relationship type to referencing in the direction selected in the dialog.

4.      A new foreign key property is created in the Child object, propagating the primary key of the parent.

For more information about using this type of relationship, see Containment Relationships.

ER/Studio Viewer Features

Visual Data Lineage (VDL)

Visually analyze and document how data flows through your organization without needing to inspect code. View and print data lineage diagrams from the Data Lineage tab. For more information, see "Documenting Data Extraction, Transformation, and Load" in the User Guide.

Repository Connectivity

Viewer users connect directly to all repository diagrams and named releases. No longer are they reliant on ER/Studio users to get the diagrams and place them on a network drive for them to access. Use Team Server Search criteria to find diagrams in the Repository.

Data Dictionary Access

Viewer users now have full access to the data dictionary of ER/Studio diagrams. Viewer users can navigate and open all dictionary object editors to browse critical information like attachment values or domain binding information.

Read-only Editor Access to All Model Objects

Unlimited viewing of Model objects such as Entities, Attributes, Relationships, Views, schema objects, and others. Viewer users have access to all properties such as storage parameters, the DDL preview, definitions/notes – everything.

Model Layout Capabilities

The Viewer displays the same sophisticated layout algorithms available in ER/Studio. The layout engines can be used to clean up a model layout prior to printing to make the model more readable.

Workstation and Concurrent Licensing

ER/Studio Viewer now has the same concurrent and workstation licensing as ER/Studio. If your viewer license has expired please contact [email protected] or Support to unlock it.

Object Editor Access

ER/Studio Viewer now allows the user read-only access to the property editors for all objects on the diagram and in the explorer tree. You'll have complete, detailed model information such as definitions, notes, constraints, dependency and pre/post-SQL, and relationship properties.

Entity Pop-Up Help

A customizable feature that allows the user to instantly obtain information related to the entity/table objects by hovering the cursor over the desired object. The user can customize this view by selecting text from the entity's definition, notes, attributes, keys, color properties, and more. Select "View" from the Main Menu, then select the "Model Help Settings" submenu for the complete list.

Model Explorer Browser

Easily browse and find information within the model with a familiar Explorer-type browser. Toggle between Logical and Physical Models, drill down to the attribute level while the application highlights the object on screen for easy identification.

Zoom Window

This sizable, positionable window magnifies the view of all objects on the modeling workspace underneath the cursor. This is particularly useful when navigating large models.

Customizable Model Views

Choose the level of information you wish to view within the model as it appears on the workspace. The user can choose to see the model as a series of simple entities and their relationships, can expose all of an entity's attributes, view only the primary keys, and more. In addition, the users can increase or decrease the zoom-level via a readily available toolbar selection.

Choose Your Design Notation

ER/Studio Viewer allows the user to toggle between any one of the three leading data modeling notations supported by the native ER/Studio Data Architect application: IDEF1X, Information Engineering (IE or 'Crows Foot'), and Filtered IE (hidden foreign keys).

Printing Capability

ER/Studio Viewer allows the user to print diagrams. The application has the same level of printing support available in the native ER/Studio application. A full range of printing capabilities is available, including print-to-scale, and more.

Complete ER/Studio Help Guide

Provides the same level of information found in the commercially available version of ER/Studio, including information on the data modeling notations, how to use ER/Studio's advanced graphical features, and more.

On-Line HTML Help

ER/Studio features an HTML help facility that takes advantage of the universal search and browsing capabilities of a browser-based system.
