Thank you for using Embarcadero DBArtisan, the award winning DBA tool for enterprise-wide database administration. What's New in Version 8.7.5/XE

Updated SQL Agent Support

Previous DBArtisan versions provided only limited SQL Agent support after Microsoft SQL Server 2000. SQL Agent functionalty is now available with version 2005 and 2008 clients. In addition, SQL Agent functionality has been more closely integrated with the DBArtisan object model. Wizards and editors are provided to create and edit alerts, operators, and jobs. A set of object actions lets you start, stop, enable, disable, and change ownership for a job.

Offline License Borrowing

DBArtisan now allows you to consume a license in offline mode. When you explicitly check out a license (Help > Checkout License) for offline use, you can use DBArtisan without a connection to your License Center for a specified duration. This lets you work while travelling or commuting, work away from your primary work area, or use DBArtisan when a network connection is unavailable or not required. You can also check a borrowed license back in (Help > Checkin License) before the duration expires.

Performance Improvements

In response to customer feedback, performance improvements have been made in the areas of connection pooling, ISQL editor functionality, and schema extraction and migration. This work includes the following user interface changes:

Editor options (File > Options > ISQL > Editor) now offer cut-and-paste options for line ending conversions. If end-of-line characters are replaced with platform-specific equivalents (Windows - CR LF, UNIX - LF, Macintosh - CR) for environments that require platform-specific end-of-line characters, unnecessary characters and incorrect display are avoided, but cut-and-paste operations take more time to complete. If end-of-line characters are not replaced, cut-and-paste operations take less time to complete.

Configuration of the Syntax Checking, Semantic Validation, and SQL Assist features (File > Options > ISQL > Code Assist) has been simplified.

What's New in Version 8.7/XE

Color-coded or labeled datasources through categorization

You can now color-code or label user interface elements associated with datasources by selecting a category when creating or editing a datasource. Each named category has an associated color and label. Four default categories (Production, Development, QA, and Test) are provided and you can create custom categories from the Register Datasource dialog. When you assign a category to a datasource, the Datasource Explorer icons for the datasource show a distinctive color-coded category indicator. Optionally, you can use the Options Editor to customize your categorization scheme to include the following user interface elements:

A short name label included in the Datasource toolbar combo/dropdown when a categorized datasource is selected
Color-coded tabs on windows associated with actions against a categorized datasource, editor or ISQL windows for example
Color-coding of the status bar at the bottom of the DBArtisan window

Datasource storage options

The Datasource panel of the Options Editor now lets you select the method used to store and access the currently loaded Datasource Catalog:

Windows Registry datasource catalog - The datasource catalog is stored and managed locally, in the Windows registry. This user can add and delete datasources and edit the registration details of existing resources. Any changes are retained across startups of DBArtisan.
File based datasource catalog - The datasource catalog is stored locally and is file-based (%APPDATA%\Embarcadero\Data Sources\ in a default installation). This user can add and delete datasources and edit the registration details of existing resources. Any changes are retained across startups of DBArtisan.
Network shared datasource catalog - The datasource catalog is file-based, and obtained from the location specified in the Location of shared datasources file control on the Datasource tab of the Options editor. Changes such as new datasources, deleted datasources or edited datasource registrations are lost as soon as this user shuts down DBArtisan.

The Import/Export functions of the Manage Datasources facility have been updated to account for the new file-based methods.

Unicode support

DBArtisan now includes Unicode support throughout the application, allowing you to work with data in different languages and display the text correctly on screen.

ISQL editor updates

The ISQL Editor has been enhanced with a set of automated validation and code assistance features:

On-the-fly syntax-checking locates and diagnoses syntax errors as you type
Semantic validation eliminates typographical errors and helps avoid outdated references in specified object names.
Code Complete analyzes statements as you type and offers intelligent suggestions with regard to object names

In addition, specified query options that customize the execution environment can now be saved and subsequently loaded. The frequency with which the options are sent to the server has been optimized.

Updated support for Microsoft SQL Server features

Index support in DBArtisan has been upgraded to account for newer Microsoft SQL Server index functionality. You can now rebuild, reorganize, and disable indexes, primary keys, and unique keys. When creating, dropping or rebuilding indexes, primary keys, or unique keys, online options are available with these operations. This release also offers sparse columns, MAXDOP support, and page and row locking.

Updated support for IBM DB2 for Linux, Unix, and Windows features

DBArtisan 8.7 supports the following recent upgrades to IBM DB2 for Linux, Unix, and Windows functionality:

IMMEDIATE and DEFERRED options when editing buffer pools
Encoding scheme options of ASCII, UNICODE, or NONE for character or graphic string parameters in procedures and functions
Object ownership transfer for object owners and users with SECADM authority
Additional “history” deadlock event types for Event Monitors
Inherit isolation level with or without lock request options on Structured Type methods

Updated support for IBM DB2 for z/OS features

This release features the following feature upgrades or improvements:

The truncate operation has been extended to control DROP STORAGE/REUSE STORAGE, RESTRICT WHEN DELETE TRIGGERS/IGNORE DELETE TRIGGERS, and IMMEDIATE clauses of the TRUNCATE TABLE statement.
Revised calculation and display of certain index and table statistics to reflect 8.x changes to system catalogs
Support for long object names
Modification of column sizes and default values with a simple ALTER TABLE statement
Features formerly provided through proprietary stored procedures now use native stored procedures

Updated support for Oracle features

When creating or modifying tablespace datafiles, you can now set the availability of the datafile to either ONLINE or OFFLINE.

Updated support for Sybase features

A Server shutdown Wait Time option lets you enable a grace period, an upper limit on how long to wait for normal operations to complete before forcing a shutdown.

User interface improvements

The most significant user interface improvement for the 8.7 release is a significantly reworked data source tree. The new tree provides enhanced navigation, alternative views, and a more consistent approach to options. The key addition to data source management functionality is the ability to filter the data source view by a number of different criteria.

In addition, DBArtisan 8.7 continues the reworking of object editors and wizards. Aimed at improving workflow and the user interface experience, the new editors and wizards are being reworked for consistency. The following object editors/wizards were upgraded for this release:

NOTE: Since DBArtisan is a 32-bit application that runs emulated on 64-bit versions of Windows, only 32-bit versions of the DBMS client software are supported.

IBM DB2 UDB for z/OS

Client: When going through a DB2 Connect gateway, DB2 UDB Client for Windows 6.0 or later. When going directly to the mainframe from the client, DB2 Connect Personal Edition v6 or higher on the client machine.

All DBMS versions supported in the previous release are supported for this release.

KNOWN ISSUES

For Oracle 10g systems, the Oracle client software must be installed within the the C:\Program Files (x86) directory to properly provide connectivity and required functionality to DBArtisan.

Populating Explorer trees and lists with a very large number of database objects causes high memory utilization. Filtering can be used to mitigate the problem.

The current version of DBArtisan does not support the MySQL ODBC client that shipped with previous versions of DBArtisan. If DBArtisan crashes after connecting to a MySQL data source:

Close DBArtisan.
Uninstall the older MySQL ODBC client.
Restart DBArtisan and try connecting to a MySQL datasource. You are prompted to install the MySQL client drivers.
Follow the installation instructions to install the new driver.

Note that when debugging a procedure against an Oracle data source, DBartisan performs a compilation before debugging. During a compilation, Oracle invalidates referencing objects. For example, if procedures A2 and A3 both reference procedure A1, debugging procedure A1 in DBArtisan, will result in procedures A2 and A3 being invalidated.

Currently, for Sybase data sources, the Sybase JTDS Driver does not support cp866 codepages. If you are making use of cp866 codepages, ensure that you are using another driver.

In some situations the Database Monitor may prompt to connect to an already connected datasource if auto-connect is not enabled for that datasource

DBArtisan installs the incorrect stored procedures for Capacity Analyst for a Sybase 15 database. Please refer to this Knowledge Base article: www.embarcadero.com/jive/entry.jspa?externalID=1030&caID=2

For servers running on Sybase version 12.5.3a, the CREATE ENCRYPTION KEY and DECRYPT permissions do not display properly--they'll be shown as null. See Sybase's document CR392544 ("sp_helpprotect does not show privileges related to encryption keys."). This has been fixed in ASE version 12.5.3a/ESD#1 (now available as a download) and ASE version 12.5.4.

When you are using the Debugger:

The Debugger windows (Variables, Watch, CallStack, Dependency) cannot be undocked. This behavior is deliberate and is true only for the Debugger windows. The Output window can be undocked.
When running Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2000 SP4 is required on both the client and the server.
When running the Debugger on SQL Server 2005 CLIENTS:

Verify that the file ssdebugps.dll is registered on the client machine. This file is REQUIRED for debugging and Microsoft only installs it on the server machine and not as a part of a client-only install.
Follow the instructions under the "Configure DCOM on the computer that is running Visual Studio. NET" heading from Microsoft to reconfigure the DCOM settings on your client machine: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=833977.
On the Default Properties tab of the My Computer dialog box, make sure the Default Authentication Level is set to None and that the Default Impersonation Level is set to Impersonate.

When using the Embarcadero Sybase debugger against a Sybase database with multiple temporary databases (supported in Sybase ASE 12.5.0.3 and above), either the user or the debugger application must be bound to a specific temporary database.

To bind the Embarcadero Sybase Debugger:
sp_tempdb "bind" , "ap", "Sybase Debugger", "DB", "<tempdb name>"
To bind the user:
sp_tempdb "bind", "lg", "<login id>", "DB", "<tempdb name>"

Schema migration jobs created in earlier versions of DBArtisan that were saved with a .migrate file extension must be re-created in DBArtisan 8.1 or later. Only migration jobs with a .sav extension can be reused.

DBArtisan is currently unable to create table names, column names, and check constraint names longer than 18 characters on an OS390 mainframe database.

On SQL Server 2005, the Browser component is disabled by default. With this service disabled, in DBArtisan you cannot reference SQL Server instances by name, only by port number. If you want the ability to reference SQL Server instances by name, you must enable this service on the server.
