What's New in DBArtisan 2016

POSTGRESSQL OBJECT MANAGEMENT

Wizard and Editor for Types have been added for PostgreSQL.

ANALYST EXPLORER NODE

The Analyst Node of the Explorer provides shortcuts to the License-specific Analyst Series tools. This shortcuts are:

PERFORMANCE IQ

Performance Monitoring is a feature which gives you statistics about the performance of a dbms. This feature measures different valuable statistics for the users, providing them with a tool to locate and diagnose problematic SQL code and event-based bottlenecks. Performance IQ is based in Team Server 2016 and it includes four main windows which displays relevant information. This features include three main functionalities:

Top Instances Window: Gives you statistical information about Wait Time per day for different dbms. It helps you to locate and diagnose problematic SQL code and event-based bottleneck.
Top Waits Window: Samples a data source and builds a statistical model of the load on the database based on the Wait Time.
Top I/O Window: Presents I/O information based on the Sankey diagram and Throughput vs Response Time graph.
Monitoring Alerts Window: It lists the Triggered Alerts which have been defined before in Team Server 2016.

Available for SQL Server and Oracle.
To have Performance IQ information available, Team Server 2016 must be installed and configured in DBArtisan.

MISSING INDEXES

In order to improve the performance of a system. The Missing Indexes feature analyze the system looking for Missing Indexes which once added would improve the performance. DBArtisan proposes you some Indexes to be created after analyzing the system, which can be created automatically from a Missing Index or from the dedicated wizard. Only available for SQL Server.

ISQL PERFORMANCE

SQL Editor includes the ISQL Performance functionality for SQL Server. ISQL Performance provides information about the SQL statements while you are writing in the SQL Editor. This information is included in a new window as well as listed in the Error Pane. It provides information like:

Missing Indexes
Statistics
Overlapping Statistics
Unused Indexes
SQL Performance info

Only available for SQL Server.

TEAM SERVER 2016 SUPPORT

Integration of Team Server 2016 in DBArtisan has been improved. The old Team Server Navigator has been fully integrated into the Datasource Navigator/Explorer as well as all the features only accessible from the Team Server Navigator.
When logged in Team Server 2016, three new nodes are added:

Team Server 2016 as the Data Source Catalog - Integration of Team Server 2016 in DBArtisan has been improved. The old Team Server Navigator has been fully integrated into the Datasource Navigator/Explorer as well as all the features only accessible from the Team Server Navigator.
Team Server Data Source Search - A new button for Team Server data source search has been added. This button is located in the top of the Datasource Explorer and it appears only when you are logged in Team Server 2016 and the Saved Searches node is selected.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Before using DBArtisan, please verify that your environment meets the requirements listed below:

NOTE: Users need full registry privileges during the installation and access to the keys under HKEY_CURRENT_USER in the registry after installation.

BROWSER REQUIREMENTS

DBArtisan requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 11 or later.

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

Embarcadero Technologies recommends the following minimum hardware requirements:

Pentium 4-level processor
1 GB of memory
1 GB of disk space
1024 x 768 display

OPERATING SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

DBArtisan supports the following operating systems:

Windows XP SP2 (32-bit and 64-bit)
Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)
Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
Windows 8 (32-bit and 64-bit)

XP Support Notes - Windows XP has two user security groups: Users and Power Users. Microsoft intentionally does not grant members of the Users Group the authority to install applications or make global changes to the system. Restricted Users are members of the Users Group. Standard users belong to the Power Users Group. Microsoft grants members of the Power Users Group the authority to install programs. You must be a member of the Administrators Group in order to install and use Embarcadero Technologies applications. Because Restricted Users are members of the Users Group, they cannot install and run Embarcadero Technologies applications.

Use the Group Membership tab to determine your group and review the Microsoft security guidelines. On the Control Panel, open User Accounts. On the Users tab, select a user and then click the Properties button. Click the Group Membership tab.

Vista and Windows 7 Support Notes - Windows Vista UAC and Windows 7 provide two user types: Standard users and Administrators. DBArtisan can be installed or uninstalled by an administrator or by a standard user using an administrator token. Standard users can run DBArtisan. For the purpose of running DBArtisan, default standard user token privileges should not be modified. Modifying standard user token privileges can result in licensing issues which will prevent DBArtisan from operating properly.

32-BIT VERSUS 64-BIT APPLICATION CONSIDERATIONS AND RESTRICTIONS

If you install the 64-bit version of DBArtisan and you are using custom drivers, you must be using 64-bit versions of those drivers when using the 64-bit version of DBArtisan. Similarly, 32-bit versions of custom drivers must be used with the 32-bit DBArtisan installation.

For version control integration, if you install the 64-bit version of DBArtisan, you can work with either a 32-bit or 64-bit MSSCCI provider. The feature is controlled from the Options Editor's Version Control tab (File > Options > General > Version Control).

DBMS SUPPORT AND CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS

DEDICATED SUPPORT CONNECTIVITY OPTIONS

DBArtisan provides dedicated connectivity to a specific version range of IBM DB2 for Linux, Unix, and Windows, IBM DB2 for z/OS, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Sybase, and Teradate databases. The following connectivity options are provided:

Native Embarcadero drivers - DBArtisan is packaged with a set of native drivers, each requiring a DBMS-specific client to be installed.
JDBC drivers - DBArtisan can connect to a datasource more directly using one of the packaged, third-party JDBC drivers. No additional connectivity components need to be installed. One or more third-party drvers, tested against DBArtisan, are installed with DBArtisan.

The following table provides a summary of resources/requirements for connectivity to dedicated DBMS platforms. For each platform, it lists supported versions, the client software that must be installed if using native Embarcadero clients, and the third-party, Type 4 JDBC drivers packaged with DBArtisan.

GENERIC JDBC/ODBC CONNECTIVITY

Generic JDBC/ODBC connectivity to non-dedicated DBMS systems or non-database datasources is also provided. DBArtisan can connect to a datasource using a customer-provided, third-party JDBC version 4.0 or ODBC version 3.0 driver. Minimal DBArtisan functionality is provided, including a basic Explorer tree and SQL querying.

SPECIFICALLY-TESTED JDBC/ODBC CONNECTIVITY PRODUCTS: APACHE HIVE/HADOOP

DBArtisan has been successfully tested against Apache Hive/Hadoop datasources using the Hortonworks ODBC driver. Similarly, Cloudera Impala datasources have been tested using the Cloudera JDBC driver. In both cases, SQL querying and a Datasource Explorer/Navigator tree are available.

DBMS VERSIONS NO LONGER SUPPORTED

As of this release, DBArtisan is no longer being tested against Sybase ASE versions before 15.7.

IMPORTANT ADVISORY NOTES

If you want to run DBArtisan on Microsoft Windows 8.1, verify that third-party DBMS native drivers install properly. Consider using a JDBC connection.

TEAM SERVER 2016 INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION

Team Server 2016 must be installed and Configured in order to get Monitoring information in DBArtisan.

You can find all the information for installing Team Server 2016 in Install and Configure Team Server 2016.

Team Server URL must be also configured in DBArtisan. For that, add the Team Server URL in Tools > Options... > Team Server.

KNOWN ISSUES

The current version of DBArtisan does not support the MySQL ODBC client that shipped with previous versions of DBArtisan. If DBArtisan crashes after connecting to a MySQL data source:

Close DBArtisan.
Uninstall the older MySQL ODBC client.
Restart DBArtisan and try connecting to a MySQL datasource. You are prompted to install the MySQL client drivers.
Follow the installation instructions to install the new driver.

Note that when debugging a procedure against an Oracle data source, DBartisan performs a compilation before debugging. During a compilation, Oracle invalidates referencing objects. For example, if procedures A2 and A3 both reference procedure A1, debugging procedure A1 in DBArtisan, will result in procedures A2 and A3 being invalidated.

In some situations the Database Monitor may prompt to connect to an already connected datasource if auto-connect is not enabled for that datasource

DBArtisan installs the incorrect stored procedures for Capacity Analyst for a Sybase 15 database. Please refer to this Knowledge Base article: www.embarcadero.com/jive/entry.jspa?externalID=1030&caID=2

For servers running on Sybase version 12.5.3a, the CREATE ENCRYPTION KEY and DECRYPT permissions do not display properly--they'll be shown as null. See Sybase's document CR392544 ("sp_helpprotect does not show privileges related to encryption keys."). This has been fixed in ASE version 12.5.3a/ESD#1 (now available as a download) and ASE version 12.5.4.

The SQL Server Agent failing problem is caused by the lack of permission to enumerate the status of the server service. To determine the status of the server, the user must have permission to check the status of the server service. If the user running DBArtisan at the client machine is a not a local user who can be authenticated at the server machine, the Server Agent jobs will fail.
Workaround:
a. If the user that runs DBArtisan is not a domain user, create the same user with the same password on the server.
b. If the user is a domain user, make sure the user can login to the server.

When you are using the Debugger:

The Debugger windows (Variables, Watch, CallStack, Dependency) cannot be undocked. This behavior is deliberate and is true only for the Debugger windows. The Output window can be undocked.
When running Windows XP SP2, SQL Server 2000 SP4 is required on both the client and the server.
When running the Debugger on SQL Server 2005 CLIENTS:

Verify that the file ssdebugps.dll is registered on the client machine. This file is REQUIRED for debugging and Microsoft only installs it on the server machine and not as a part of a client-only install.
Follow the instructions under the "Configure DCOM on the computer that is running Visual Studio. NET" heading from Microsoft to reconfigure the DCOM settings on your client machine: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=833977.
On the Default Properties tab of the My Computer dialog box, make sure the Default Authentication Level is set to None and that the Default Impersonation Level is set to Impersonate.

When using the Embarcadero Sybase debugger against a Sybase database with multiple temporary databases (supported in Sybase ASE 12.5.0.3 and above), either the user or the debugger application must be bound to a specific temporary database.

To bind the Embarcadero Sybase Debugger:
sp_tempdb "bind" , "ap", "Sybase Debugger", "DB", "<tempdb name>"
To bind the user:
sp_tempdb "bind", "lg", "<login id>", "DB", "<tempdb name>"

The BCP (bulk copy) data movement option is disabled for cross-platform migration. In addition, to use the BCP in a Sybase-to-Sybase migration, the user must be logged in as System Administrator *or* the "select into/bulkcopy/pllsort" database option must be true on the target catalog. If this option is "false" on the target catalog, BCP will not appear as a data movement option for non-system users.

Schema migration jobs created in earlier versions of DBArtisan that were saved with a .migrate file extension must be re-created in DBArtisan 8.1 or later. Only migration jobs with a .sav extension can be reused.

DBArtisan is currently unable to create table names, column names, and check constraint names longer than 18 characters on an OS390 mainframe database.

On SQL Server 2005, the Browser component is disabled by default. With this service disabled, in DBArtisan you cannot reference SQL Server instances by name, only by port number. If you want the ability to reference SQL Server instances by name, you must enable this service on the server.
