What's New in Change Manager 5.1

Thank you for using Change Manager 5.1. Change Manager provides automation to manual tasks such as database comparisons, difference reporting, and the development of synchronization scripts. Additionally, it provides support for troubleshooting database problems by retaining prior database states and versions in addition to the live source. The application is modularized among CM/Data, CM/Config, and CM/Schema which enables you to control aspects of data, configuration parameter, and schema comparisons, respectively.

Data Masking

Data masking is provided for data comparison jobs and features two masking functions: randomization and shuffling. Randomization inspects each value on a Source and then adds a corresponding new value to the Target. Shuffling randomly assigns different values between the source and the target data sources of the job.

Auto-Synchronization for Data Comparison and Schema Comparison Jobs

New options in data comparison and schema comparison jobs can be selected that will enable automatic synchronization of a target data source when the job is executed.

DBMS Unicode Support

Change Manager now fully supports data sources with Japanese, Korean, and other foreign characters for data, schema object names, and configuration values.

Cross-Platform Support for Schema Comparison Jobs

Cross-platform schema comparisons are now supported between Oracle and SQL Server platforms, and Sybase and SQL Server platforms, for the following objects: Tables, Unique Keys, Check Constraints, Foreign Keys, Indexes, Primary Keys, and Views.

Project Creation and Management

The Explorer view enables you to create projects, in addition to the 'Change Management' default project. Subsequently, Jobs, Standards, and Synchronization Scripts can then be saved to different projects for file organization and performance needs.

Job Notification Enhancements

Job Notification options have been expanded to include File System parameters, for sending notifications to local or network directories, and System Tray parameters, for enabling pop-up notifications on your Desktop.

New History Tab

A History tab has been added to the Data Comparison Job Editor. This feature tracks the execution activities of the specified job, and displays information such as the date of execution, host name, and the synchronization methods that were selected (None, Script, or Automatic Synchronization).

Enhanced Data Comparison Mapping

The Mapping tab of the Data Comparison Job Editor has been enhanced to feature high-level alters and warning when invalid or incomplete mapping is detected. Additionally, new Mapping functionality enables you to set custom warning levels for criteria such as length mismatches, constraints on the target, and precision/scale differences.

Important Advisory Notes

A new installation option enables Change Manager to be installed as an Eclipse plug-in, in addition to the standard installation procedure. This feature enables Eclipse users to add a version of Change Manager with full functionality to their development environment without requiring the standalone application. Enabling Change Manager as a plug-in is not an automated process - refer to the installation manual for more information about this process.
Change Manager is now supported on some Linux platforms (x86-32, GTK 2, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0, and SuSe Linux Enterprise Server 10).
When upgrading to Change Manager 5.1, the installation folder will change. Be sure to review any command line scripts to point to the new changec executable.

Linux Installation Notes

MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME should be set to a path containing the XPCOM libraries (e.g. /usr/local/seamonkey).

Known Issues

General

SQL Filter's conditions changes - In 5.0.3, the conditions within a SQL Filter are applied in an AND manner (an intersection of the conditions specified), but in 5.1, the conditions are applied in an OR manner (a reunion of conditions).
Type filter text from Data Source Explorer does not apply correctly for imported data sources.
The SQL Editor doesn't have an option to Set ON/OFF ARITHABORT for SQL SErver, so the DML generated by data comparison will fail on tables with indexes on computed columns or indexed views if the default Server setting is OFF.
Running jobs from the command line is not yet supported for the All Access InstantOn version of the Change Manager build.
The CM Schema 4.0 943 patch needs to be run twice in order to successfully update an older CM Schema installation.
Code complete is available only after enabling indexing o\ the specific data source.
While licensing, if the error "Cannot find base license" appears, try removing the line: "[email protected]/change_manager_5/configuration" from the change.ini file and changec.ini file in the installation folder of Change Manager 5.1.

Schema Comparison

The Ignore Object Permissions option for schema comparison jobs does not work if the Enable Dependency Linking option is not selected in the Preferences page. By default, Enable Dependency Linking is unchecked for Oracle, so all Grant statements for Oracle objects are not extracted and compared.
Identical views with different Header comments cannot be synchronized on SQL Server.
Comparison fail views on SQL Server if the "Compatibility level" server property is set to 70=SQL Server 7.0.
Comparison fails for Tables and Indexes on DB2 if the system temporary tablespace is a pagesize smaller than 8k. We recommend using a 16k pagesize so that Change Manger queries run seamlessly.
When using DB2 version 8.1 with different collation between the source and target, the object matching will not be correct due to an IBM server known limitation.
Identical views are seen as different when comparing cross platform objects SQL Server vs. Oracle due to text property which specifies the view columns on Oracle. The same problem occurs for SQL Server vs. Sybase, due to the way that Sybase returns the select statement.
Identical Check constraints are seen as different when comparing objects on Oracle, Sybase towards SQL Server, due to the way SQL Server returns check conditions.
When comparing tables among different versions of Oracle, the default values for Storage parameters will be removed from synchronization.

Data Comparison

For MS SQL, the user should manually exclude System Databases from any Data Movement and Data comparison (e.g. master, msdb, model, etc.) in order to avoid any alteration on data dictionary. Data Migration JDBC limitations:

a. When updating IBM DB2 client with new patches, or upgrading frmo the installed version, it needs to be rebound to the IBM DB2 server. If rebinding is not performed, there will be problems in getting metadata using the DB2 driver. One solution is to drop and recreate the database if you are unconcerned about the data in that database. This will automatically perform the required bindings.

b. For tables having columns with data type DECFLOAT, data migration gives null pointer exception and the data does not get moved properly.

c. For tables having columns with data type MLSLabel Oracle driver gives a null pointer exception.

Trim trailing spaces option is recommended to be used when doing cross platform comparison for tables with binary, nchar, numeric or unichar data types towards SQL server because the server is appending trailing blanks and 0s when data is inserted in the tables.

Upgrading from Version 4.0 or 5.0 to 5.1

Change Manager 5.1 provides an upgrade process for moving jobs and other information from an existing Change Manager 4.0 and 5.0 installations. All objects can be imported from version 5.0.

The following objects can be imported from version 4.0:

The following objects cannot be imported from version 4.0:

Schema Archives
Synchronization Scripts
Reports
Command Line Automation (scheduled jobs, batch files, etc.)

Note: Change Manager 4.0 can remain installed to access archives and reports.

To import objects from Change Manager 4.0:

1. To import schema comparison jobs, obtain and install cmschema_40_932_upgrade.exe from Embarcadero Technologies.

2. Launch Change Manager 5.1 and follow the wizard to "Import data sources, jobs, and settings from a previous version of Change Manager"

You can rerun the import process at any time by issuing the File > Import command in Change Manager 5.0. Consult the online help for more information regarding the 'Import' command, or refer to the Installation Guide for more information about the upgrade process.
